Nokia Lumia Windows 8 Phones for Straight Talk

Nokia offers 3 Lumia models that can be used with the Straight Talk sim card plan. The models in the Lumia series are the 810, 820 and the top of the line 920. Be aware that the 820 and 920 are locked to AT&T while the 810 is locked to TMobile. The great thing about Windows 8 compared to Windows 7 is that it gives us a way to add the Straight Talk settings so it's not necessary to purchase a carrier unlocked device. All 3 phones are readily available on the used market but be are rather expensive because they are still relatively new. Expect prices to come down as the year progresses. Nokia Lumia 810- Find Used

The Nokia Lumia 810 is the one and only Windows 8 phone locked to TMobile that will work with a TMobile compatible Straight Talk sim card. This is a large 4.3" screen phone with impressive specs. It comes with a 1.5 ghz dual core processor, front 1.2mp and rear 8.0 mp facing cameras. Additionally, it's one of the first Windows devices where you can install a microSD card for additional storage and comes with 8gb of built in storage. Note that the HTC phones do not have this capability, only the Lumias Windows 8. It's an 4g LTE compatible device and when used with Straight Talk, you will get the HSPA+ so will be about 2 to 3 times faster than a standard 3g device. The main selling point on this phone, as far as we are concerned is that it is the only carrier locked phone that can be used with TMobile. Overall, this is an excellent device for use on Straight Talk and is one of the more affordable Lumias out there, at least on the second hand market.

Used market pricing: Around $375 - will come down considerably as 2013 progresses

Straight Talk Sim card type: Micro sim card (small sim card) installed by removing the battery cover.

Straight Talk MMS: Yes, you can add Straight Talk MMS settings with the stock cellular Windows 8 screen

Straight Talk Carrier: TMobile locked. Unlocked devices also available and will work with AT&T but is probably better to just get a Lumia 820 instead. Will require that you modify the standard size TMobile sim card. Learn to modify TMobile sim

Pros: Excellent specs, fully compatible with Straight Talk sim card, great digital camera, excellent multimedia phone

Cons: Battery cover difficult to remove, rather large form factor, not as slim and light as the HTC phones.

RecommendationThe phone is rather affordable on the used market, currently selling for less than $400. If you prefer TMobile over AT&T then this is the only phone that will work assuming you don't buy an unlocked phone. Since the phone is on the affordable side, then this is a phone you can easily jump on right now. You will need to modify the standard sized TMobile card to fit this phone though. Nokia Lumia 820- Find Used

The Nokia Lumia 820 is the entry level Windows 8 Lumia phone for AT&T. This is essentially the same phone as the one above but locked to AT&T. As such, the specs are just about the same as the Nokia Lumia 810 above. Additionally, the phone is priced very similarly so it can be found for below 400 bucks. What's notable about the Lumia 820 is that it's fully compatible with the Straight Talk sim card plan just like the rest of the Windows 8 line up. The Lumia 820 will also give you HSPA+ speeds so data will be a whole lot faster than standard 3g phones. The only negative on this phone is the rather weird battery cover that's difficult to remove, that said, you will probably rarely have to do this but will need to remove it to install the sim card and/or mircroSD card.

Used market pricing: Around $370 - will come down considerably as 2013 progresses

Features: 3g and 4g data via AT&T , large 4.3" screen, 1.5ghz dual core, comes in different colors , excellent 8mp camera, easy to find on used market for less than $400.

Operating System: Windows 8

Storage Capacity:8gb storage with expandable microSD storage all new in Windows 8.

Straight Talk Sim card type: Micro sim card (small sim card) installed by removing the battery cover.

Straight Talk MMS: Yes, you can add Straight Talk MMS settings via the stock cellular Windows 8 screen. Great News!

Straight Talk Carrier: AT&T locked phones are all fully compatible. Straight Talk micro sims are available so no need to modify cards like you do for TMobile.

Pros: Easy to find on the used market, excellent specs with an awesome digital camera, fast 4g data, easy to switch to AT&T if you don't end up liking the Straight Talk service.

Cons: Strange battery cover design that's difficult to remove, large form factor that's not as slim as some of the newer devices.

RecommendationIf you want to jump into the Windows 8 OS, then this is probably the easiest phone to find at an affordable price. It's got excellent specs and will provide fast 4g service even with Straight Talk. About the only thing I don't like about it is that it's very large and square to the point it's awkward. I think the Lumia 920 would make for a much better device so I would wait for the Lumia 920 devices to come down in price and go for that one instead.

Nokia Lumia 920- Find Used

The Nokia Lumia 920 is the flagship Lumia series phone. It's got amazing specs and a cool wireless charging plate not found on any other Windows 8 phone. This is an AT&T locked device so you will need the AT&T compatible sim from Straight Talk. About the only negative is the price as it is going for well over $500 even when used (at the time of this writing). As with the rest of the Windows 8 line up, the phone is fully compatible with the Straight Talk sim, this means you will be able to use all features including 4g data, text messaging and picture messaging.

Used market pricing: Around $350 - will come down considerably as 2013 progresses

Features: 3g and 4g data via AT&T , large 4.5" screen, 1.5ghz dual core, comes in different colors , excellent 8.7mp camera, wireless charging plate, HD screen, plenty of internal storage (32 gb).

Operating System: Windows 8

Storage Capacity:32 gb of storage, no microSD slot.

Straight Talk Sim card type: Micro sim card (small sim card) installed via sim card tray located on top of the phone.

Straight Talk MMS: Yes, you can add Straight Talk MMS settings via the stock cellular Windows 8 screen. Great News!

Straight Talk Carrier: AT&T locked phones are all fully compatible.

Pros: Excellent specs, large screen, fully compatible with the Straight Talk sim card even on AT&T locked phones, one of the more advanced phones on the market.

Cons:No expandable microSD card slot, closed battery design, somewhat expensive even on used market.

RecommendationThis is by far the most advanced Windows 8 phone on the market right now. It would make for an excellent Windows 8 device for use on the Straight Talk sim card plan. That said, it is very expensive right now so it would be wise to wait a bit before jumping into one. You will probably be able to find it for less as the year progresses. This phone boasts an amazing 41 megapixel camera with the most sophisticated optics ever installed on a phone. This phone will easily replace and surpass your regular point and shoot camera. In addition to the 41mp, the phone comes with a 3x high resolution camera. The rest of the phone is basically the same as the Nokia 920. Essentially, all specs on the 1020 are about the same as they are on the 920 including the 4.5" screen and the 1.5 ghz dual core processor. Of course, the 1020 comes with the all new Windows 8 operating system and its tile interface which performs fabulously.

Straight Talk Sim card type: Micro sim card (small sim card) installed by removing the battery cover, must be AT&T compatible sim card.

Straight Talk MMS: Yes, you can add Straight Talk MMS settings with the stock cellular Windows 8 screen

Straight Talk Carrier: AT&T so the phone must either be an unlocked device or an AT&T locked phone. AT&T locked phones will be far less expensive.

Pros: Great specs, amazing digital camera, great imaging apps.

Cons: The phone is new so is quite expensive. The phone also suffers from the non removable battery that comes on the 920.

RecommendationThis is no doubt an amazing phone. Probably one of the best smartphones out there and definitely the best digital camera to ever grace a smartphone. The only problem with the phone is that it is quite costly at this time even on used devices.
