HTC Windows 8 Phones for Straight Talk

As of this writing, HTC offers 2 high quality Windows 8 devices that are compatible with Straight Talk. What's notable about the HTC phones is that they are much less expensive than the Nokia Lumia series phones yet offer similar functionality and specs. In fact, the high end HTC 8x can be had for about 1/2 the cost of the Nokia Lumia 920. That said, expect to pay around $400 for both the HTC 8x and 8s as they are new models. Of course, this will come down considerably in the coming year once people start selling off their used devices, so if you have the patience, you might want to wait a bit before getting one. What's great about the HTC Windows 8 devices is that unlike their Windows 7 counterparts, you can now add both the Straight Talk MMS and Data apns even if the device is locked to a carrier. This means you don't have to rely on HTC to give you an app for that. Keep in mind that there is no need to purchase an unlocked device for use with Straight Talk as AT&T locked phones will work just fine provided you get the AT&T compatible Straight Talk sim card kit. HTC 8s- Find Used

The HTC 8s is the little brother to the HTC 8x. It has the same general look/feel to it than the 8x albeit with lower specs across the board. The 8s is also a slightly smaller phone for those of us who aren't crazy about the large screened phones. This one is a 4" screened device so it's smaller in size. As mentioned, specs are considerably lower on the 8s where it matters. The 8s has a 1.0ghz dual core, only 4gb of internal space (expandable via microSD card) and a 5 mp main camera with no front facing camera. The thing I like about this phone is that the color selection is more attractive than the 8. I also like how the bottom of the phone (where the buttons are) persists the over all color scheme. Like the 8x, this one also has Beats Audio as well. The 8s will also be available for AT&T and TMobile. Be sure to stay away from Verizon locked devices because they will not work with your Straight Talk sim card.

Used market pricing: Around $400 - will come down considerably as 2013 progresses

Features: 3g and 4g data via AT&T or TMobile, 4.0" gorilla glass screen , 1.0ghz dual core processor, comes in 4 different two toned colors , 5mp camera , microSD card expandable, Beats Audio.

Operating System: Windows 8

Storage Capacity:Only 4gb storage but unlike the 8x and all Windows 7 phones for that matter, can be expanded via microSD card.

Straight Talk Sim card type: Micro sim card (small sim card) installed via bottom mounted compartment.

Straight Talk MMS: Yes, you can add Straight Talk MMS settings with the stock cellular Windows 8 screen

Straight Talk Carrier: AT&T locked, TMobile locked and Unlocked devices available. There are Verizon models but DO NOT BUY those because they won't work with Straight Talk sim.

Pros: Cool and funky two toned color body, superior specs to old Windows 7 phones, nicely sized form factor, ability to add Straight Talk MMS and Data.

Cons: Closed battery design so you can't pop in a new battery once old one deteriorates, currently selling for not much less than the 8x so not really worth paying the same for less.

RecommendationI wouldn't jump on the HTC 8s just yet. It's just been released and there are not many used models available yet. New models are costing just as much as slightly used 8xs and appear to be European imports. Once the prices come down, however, this will make for a fine Windows 8 device on Straight Talk. I expect it to cost considerably less than the 8x once used models come online. Check Straight Talk Sim Availability

HTC 8x- Find Used

The HTC 8x is an attractive large form factor device that represents the flagship HTC Windows 8 model. The 8x is available locked to either TMobile or AT&T so you can have a choice of which carrier to use. Be aware that Straight Talk does not offer the micro sim for the TMobile locked devices so you will need to modify a regular sized sim to fit. No worries if you pick up an AT&T locked phone as micro sims are available. The selling points on the 8x are a large gorilla glass 4.3" screen, 4g capable, 16gb of internal memory, 1.4ghz dual core processor and 8 megapixel main camera with 2mp front. Additionally, you have your choice of 4 different colors (black, blue, neon green, red) with the blue and black being the most readily available in the used market. Finally, the phone comes with Beats Audio which is all new for the HTC Windows 8 devices. This is an excellent device if you enjoy the large form factor phones. Based on the specs, the 8x is far more advanced than any of the previous generation HTC Windows 7 phones. Be aware that this phone is also available for Verizon so be sure NOT TO GUY a Verizon CDMA locked phone since it will NOT work with the Straight Talk sim card.

Used market pricing: Around $400 - will come down considerably as 2013 progresses

Features: 3g and 4g data via AT&T or TMobile, 4.3" gorilla glass screen , 1.4ghz dual core, comes in 4 different colors , 8mp camera , Beats Audio

Operating System: Windows 8

Storage Capacity:16gb storage, there is no expandable sd storage.

Straight Talk Sim card type: Micro sim card (small sim card) installed via side mounted sim tray

Straight Talk MMS: Yes, you can add Straight Talk MMS settings via the stock cellular Windows 8 screen. Great News!

Straight Talk Carrier: AT&T locked, TMobile locked and Unlocked devices available. There are Verizon models but DO NOT BUY those as they won't work with Straight Talk sim.

Pros: Very attractive slim design, amazing high end specs, lots of features, ability to add Straight Talk MMS and Data apns without the need of an app.

Cons: Battery compartment is closed which translates to pain in the butt when battery dies, expensive even used, large form factor

RecommendationIf you're an early adopter who likes a high end device, this will probably be one of the more affordable Windows 8 devices for sometime as the comparable Nokia Lumia 920 is selling for well over $300-$400 more than the HTC 8X. The phone has some amazing specs compared to the previous generation Windows 7 phones but of course this comes at a substantial premium. If you don't mind paying the cold hard cash, the HTC is well worth the money. Check Straight Talk Sim Availability
