Nokia Lumia 820 Straight Talk Data and MMS Setup

The Nokia Lumia 820 is fully compatible with the Straight Talk sim card plan. So we can configure the necessary settings even on phones meant for use with AT&T or TMobile. Here are the instructions for configuring your Nokia Lumia 820 with the Straight Talk Sim card plan.

Straight Talk Sim Card Availability

1. Before you get started, you will need to activate your new sim card on the Straight Talk website so that we can test the settings once we are done configuring the phone.

2. Once our sim is active, we will need to install the sim on our phone. To do so, you will need to remove the battery cover. If you haven't found out yet, the cover is rather strange and difficult to remove on the 820. Press your thumb next to the camera, the part that says "Carl Zeiss optics", then place your fingernail on the top lip of the cover and push on the Carl Zeiss part. Probably easier to see it on the image below.

3.With that out of the way, remove the battery and locate the sim slot on the side of the battery slot. Simply slide it into the slot and press until it clicks into place.

4. Put the phone back together and power it on. At this point, you can make/receive calls and regular texts. From the main homescreen, scroll to the Gear icon to enter the settings setup.

5. Scroll to find the Cellular menu option and tap

6. The first thing to setup is the data so tap the "add internet apn" option. This will allow you to browse the internet, download apps, get on Facebook, etc.

7. All that is needed is the APN box so enter att.mvno . In some cases, you may need to enter the full settings below:
For AT&T Locked Phones
APN: att.mvno
Proxy server(URL):
Proxy Port: 80

Most people will only need the APN but will not hurt if you enter the Proxy server and proxy port.

For TMobile Locked Phones- I will disclose that I have never tried with TMobile but here are the settings
APN: wap.tracfone

For Proxy Server (URL) Straight talk says to leave blank but says to enter a port of 8080. The phone, however, does not allow a Port without a proxy server so leave both blank and try. If that does not work, then try for Proxy Server (URL) and 8080 for port.

8. Once entered, simply tap the disk icon at the bottom to save.

9. Now tap the "add mms apn" button to enter the MMS setup screen. These settings will allow you to send pictures via text messaging. Without it, you will only be able to send regular text messages.

10. On the MMS APN screen you will enter the following Straight Talk mms settings as found in the included instructions of your Sim Card kit. These are the only options you will need. Notice that the save icon (disk icon at the bottom) will not be enabled until you enter this information.

For AT&T Locked Phones
APN : att.mvno
WAP Gateway:
WAP Gateway Port: 80

For TMobile Locked Phones- I will disclose that I have never tried with TMobile but here are the settings

WAP Gateway: leave blank
WAP Gateway Port :leave blank
MMSC Port: the phone will autofill this but Straight talk says to leave blank. Try it with the autofill value first, then try 8080 if that doesn't work.

You will notice that the phone will automatically set the MMSC Port to 80. This is fine.

11.Tap the disk icon when done to save your settings.

12. You can now test your mms settings by sending a picture to another cell phone. You might also want to test receiving by sending your 820 a picture message as well.

That's it, your Nokia Lumia 820 is now MMS and data enabled. The phone will use HSPA+ which is 2 to 3 times faster than 3g, there is nothing needed to set this up. AT&T somehow blocks full LTE 4g to these sim cards so this is one limitation you cannot get around.
